Praksa mladih sa Down sindromom

//Praksa mladih sa Down sindromom

Sretno omladino!

The right to work is a basic human right of people with disabilities, including people with Down syndrome. People with disabilities have the right to participate in the open labor market, on an equal basis with others, without discrimination. This right is guaranteed by many international and domestic legal regulations. Therefore, our Association, in the strategy of action in the field of employment on the open labor market, set advocacy for the realization of this right of people with Down syndrome as one of the five strategic directions. The activities carried out within this strategic direction are different: research with the aim of defining key obstacles in the labor market for people with Down syndrome; creation of the Mediation and Employment Model for people with Down syndrome; creation of tools for a better transition of a person from school to the labor market; cooperation with employers with the aim of enabling young people to acquire work experience; cooperation with employment services; youth training; mediation in concrete employment, etc.

The inclusion of people with Down syndrome in the labor market is beneficial in many ways. Work significantly improves the quality of life of people with Down syndrome, as it enables them to constantly learn, be visible in society, establish and develop friendships, ensure their existence, which directly increases self-confidence, self-esteem and greater independence from others. It is very important to know that a person with Down syndrome feels best in a working environment and a collective that has developed quality conflict management, in which work colleagues have developed empathy, tolerance and respect diversity. That is why the association strives and, through cooperation with employers, influences that companies/collectives develop in this direction.

One of our partners is the company “Inditex”, with which we implement a program to support young people with Down syndrome in acquiring their first work experience. The trainees are high school students and high school graduates and at the same time they are members of our “Neka, ja ću” Youth Club. After several days of training of the mentors and managers of this company, signing of the cooperation memorandum, and preparation of the trainees, the young people began to realize their first working days. They could not hide their enthusiasm, and we expect that this internship will be a rich experience for the young people and contribute to their decision on further career choices.

Good luck young people!
